Abstract
1389338 Surge diverters WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 6 Oct 1972 [12 Oct 1971] 46201/72 Heading H1D A surge diverter comprises electrodes 22, 36 mounted at opposite ends of a tubular dielectric housing 12 and a conductive layer 42, formed, for example, by sputtering from electrode 22, is in contact with the latter electrode and acts as a starting electrode when a discharge is initiated. The electrode 22 is formed with a shoulder 26 spaced from a counterbore in the housing 12 to reduce conduction over the housing surface. The housing is filled with 10% hydrogen and 90% argon at 150 torr. The diverters can be evacuated and filled individually or several may be placed in a bell jar which can be evacuated and filled. In the latter case final soldering together of the parts can be performed in the desired atmosphere allowing omission of the tubulation 43. A circuit for applying pulses to form layer 42 by sputtering is described, Fig. 3 (not shown). The layer may be formed by other methods such as sintering a metal paste or by vapour deposition.
