Abstract

1389043 Drawing BENTELER-WERKE AG 16 June 1972 [24 June 1971] 28284/72 Heading B3P A metal tube 1 is drawn through a train of drawing dies 4, each of which is preceded by a sleeve 5 defining with the tube 1 an annular, converging gap 12 which is supplied with lubricant at an initial pressure not exceeding 100 atmos. which is raised to a working pressure of at least 600 atmos. in front of the die 4 as the drawing proceeds resulting in no surface to surface contact between the tube 1 and the dies 4. Lubricant at a pressure of 20-100 atm. is introduced through an inlet 13 into the conconverging gap 12 formed between the tube 1 the sleeve 5 which is held against the die 4 in a dieholder 3 by a ring 7 and whose inner surface has a taper γ of not more than 3 degrees, e.g. 1À5 degrees. The length of the gap 12 is at least equal to 5-15 times the diameter of the tube 1. At a drawing speed of more than 200 m./sec., e.g. 300 m./sec., the pressure of the lubricant is increased to 2200-3000 atm. An increase in lubricant pressure is generated in the tube interior by supplying lubricant from a pipe 16 into a converging gap 15 formed betseen the tube interior and a floating plug 14 having a taper γ, of not more than 3 degrees, e.g. 1À5 degrees. The plug 14 has a conical portion 14b having an angle # of 5-15 degrees, e.g. 9 degrees whilst the corresponding conical portion of the die 4 has an angle α of 10-20 degrees, e.g. 15 degrees. Lubricant is passed through the plug 14 by a pipe 17. A steel tube having an external diameter of 9-35 mm. and a wall thickness less than 3À5 mm. may be so drawn to a diameter of 3 mm. and a wall thickness of less than 1 mm.
