Abstract

1388855 Structural joints A S BHAGAT and S A BHAGAT 26 June 1972 [24 March 1971] 7735/71 Heading F2M [Also in Division E1] A structural joint for connecting together sections of a structure, e.g. adjacent sections of alattticework bridge structure, comprises at least one ridge and one groove provided in one face of each of two members to be joined, the joint being formed by interfitting the ridge of one member with a complementary groove of the other member and vice-versa, the ridge and groove formation being such as to either prevent or limit relative movement between the members in all directions and to provide a taper lock, as a result of employing a relatively gradual taper and flat-topped ridges the width of which is greater than the width of the complementary groove floors. In one embodiment, Figs. 1-3, ridges A, B and grooves A 1 , B 1 of member 2 interengage grooves A<SP>1</SP> 1 , B<SP>1</SP> 1 and ridges A<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>1</SP>, respectively, of member 2<SP>1</SP>. As shown, the ridges and grooves are of arcuate form and when interengaged permit limited pivotal movement between the members 2, 2<SP>1</SP> about the axis of central apertures 6, 6<SP>1</SP> in the respective members. The joint is fixed by inserting a bolt 3 through the aligned apertures 6, 6<SP>1</SP> and tightening a nut 5. In the modification of Figs. 4, 5A, radial ribs A 2 and grooves B 2 of member 2 interengage grooves B<SP>1</SP> 2 and A<SP>1</SP> 2 , respectively, of the member 2<SP>1</SP>, the members 2, 2<SP>1</SP> again being secured together by a bolt passing through aligned central apertures 6<SP>11</SP>. Either of the above joints may additionally include apertured lugs (Figs. 7, 8, not shown) for further securing bolts. An example of a bridge latticework structure employing these joints is shown in Fig. 9K which illustrates a threetier structure comprising upper, middle and lower sections interconnected by joints 17, 21, further joints being provided between the assembly and similar adjacent assemblies on either side by joint members 18, 19, 22, 23, 27 and 28.
