Benches, work.-Building slabs for houses, barracks, and other buildings are made by placing the various parts of which they are composed in grooves in a jig or mould and nailing them together while held therein. The mould for making the slab shown in longitudinal and transverse sections in Figs. 9 and 10 comprises a plate or table 3, Figs. 1, 3, and 5, preferably on legs 2, provided with fixed or removable stops 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 forming grooves to receive the blocks 10, 11, 12, 13 forming the ribs of the slab. A sheet 14 of pasteboard or tar-board and a layer 15 of planking is laid over the blocks 10 - - 13 and clamped in position by means of slidable sections 16 of the edges of the mould, which are operated by lever mechanism 17, and the planks and blocks are nailed together. Further layers of blocks 18, pasteboard 19, and planks 20 are superposed, and the whole nailed together while held by the clamping sections 16. The assembled parts are then removed from the mould by means of lifting bars 24, Fig. 3, extending through the bottom of the mould and actuated by levers 21, and are reinserted upside down as shown in Fig. 6, and layers of pasteboard 25 and planks 26 are secured to the blocks 10 - - 13. Removable bars such as 28 are employed in the mould to form grooves between the superposed blocks to allow the slabs to be secured to the ground and top sills 30, 31, Fig. 11, of the building by means of keys 36. The centre layer 15, Fig. 10, of planking projects beyond the blocks to engage grooves 35 in the posts 32, and the ends 37 of the paste-board also project to bind tightly against the posts.
