Abstract

1388458 Tracheostomy appliances; endotracheal appliances R G CARROLL 21 Nov 1972 [2 Aug 1972] 53639/72 Heading A5R [Also in Division F2] A tracheostomy or endotracheal tube 1 is provided with an elastic cuff 2 encircling the tube near its distal end, and a tubule 4 having a distal end communicating with the cuff through an outlet 5 and a proximal end having an air inlet for inflating the cuff, the proximal end 7 of the cuff being sealed to the tube and the distal end 8 of the cuff being stretchable radially away from the tube by excessive air pressure in the cuff to form a check valve. As shown the cuff is inflated by a syringe 3 to form a seal against the trachea T; after removal of the syringe the tubule may be clamped or plugged. Part of the tubule may be moulded into the wall of the tube. The proximal end 7 of the cuff is sealed against the tube 1 by an adhesive; the distal end 8 of the cuff is in the form of a cylindrical band prevented from sliding along the tube by a spot of adhesive 9. The cylindrical band may be of pleated form. For Figure see next column
