Abstract

1388145 Preparation of potassium dihydrogen phosphate; fertilizers FITZWILTON Ltd 14 May 1973 [12 May 1972] 22429/72 Headings C1A and C1B Potassium dihydrogen phosphate and soluble polymerized forms of this salt are prepared by reacting KCl and H 3 PO 4 in a molar ratio of P to K of 1 : 1 to 1À25 : 1 and blowing air through the reaction mixture to remove HCl. In an example, fertilizer grade KCl was fed at a constant rate (1800 g./hr.) with phosphonic acid to an air sparged reactor at 250‹ C. The ratio of H 3 PO 4 to potash in the feed was such as to give a product containing 1À1 moles P/mole K. The product from the reactor was passed to a second reactor working under the same conditions and this yielded a product containing 7À7% free acid, expressed as P 2 O 5 and 1À5% chloride. This product was either used directly as a fertilizer or heated with water at 110‹ C. for 2 hours to hydrolyse the phosphates, followed by vacuum drying to yield a hydrolysed product.
