Abstract
1387979 Treating exhaust gas: exhaust gas recirculation P AUGUST 22 March 1973 [21 Nov 1972] 13754/73 Heading F1B Exhaust gas afterburner for I.C. engines comprises a tubular housing I within which is a chamber 5 containing catalytic material and having an air inlet tube 30 opening into the throat of a Venturi tube 16 forming the inlet to the chamber 5, the remainder of the housing defining a by-pass passage 6, flow through which is controlled by a butterfly valve 9. The chamber 6 contains steel shavings, which may also be used as the heat storing material in chamber 5. During idling and light loading of the engine the value 9 is closed or almost closed. Gas leaves the chamber 5 by apertures 21. Part of the exhaust gas is withdrawn through a pipe 29 and recirculated to the engine intake. The housing includes heat insulating material. A blower supplies air to the tube 30. The valve 9 may be actuated directly by a bi-metal strip, or by an electro-magnet controlled by a bi-metal strip.
