Abstract

1387696 Measuring integral optical density MOSKOVSKY GOSUDARSTVENNY UNIVERSITET IMENI MV LOMONOSOVA 18 April 1972 17816/72 Heading G1A The integral optical density i.e. the optical density (log (Io/1)) integrated over a particular field of view of area S of an object is measured by a method involving detecting the light which has passed through the object after it has also been acted on by an image converter tube having a luminescent screen with a logarithmic conversion characteristic. The field of view for detection is defined by aperture diaphragm 4, behind which is positioned an image converter having a screen of e.g. 0À17% manganese, 3 x 10<SP>-4</SP>% cobalt and 99À8% zinc sulphide. Alternatively, the converter input aperture is used to define the detection field. Source 2 and a projection system 3 illumi nate the object (not shown) and a photo-multiplier 6 detects the tube 5 output, e.g. via an orange filter. In operation, two consecutive measurements are made, one with the object absent, and one with it present the second measurement being subtracted from the former to give a value proportional to integral optical density. The objects which may be measured are e.g. biological cells. The system may include a microscope optics and if necessary a monochrometer photographic films and plates, chromatograms &c. may be examined by employing projection optics.
