Abstract

1387692 Laminated honeycomb panels PANEL/COMB INDUSTRIES CORP 29 Feb 1972 [4 Oct 1971] 9259/72 Heading B5N A structural panel comprises a honeycomb core 11 of paper strips 12 forming cells 14, facings 20, 21, each including a thermosetting resinous plastics layer 23, 24 and a thermosetting resinous layer 28, 29 having a glass fibre reinforcing layer 26, 27 containing 4% by weight of hollow thermoplastic 10-100 micron spheres, columns 30 of thermosetting resin extending from the latter layer along a substantial number of the corners of the core cells. The strips 12 may be impregnated with a phenolic resin and the core cells may be partially filled with foamed polyurethane. Layers 23, 24 may be a cobalt soap-promoted pigmented maleic/isophthalic/propylene glycol/diethylene glycol polymer. Layers 28, 29 may be derived from a maleic/isophthalic/propylene glycol resin dissolved in styrene. The reinforcement 26, 27 may comprise woven rovings bonded to a chopped strand mat. The thermoplastic spheres may be of polyvinylidene chloride or polyacrylonitrile. Laminations may comprise placing the first layer as a gel coat on a heatable horizontal platen, either applying the second layer as a pre-impregnated glass layer or applying the glass fibre layer and resin separately, embedding the core without displacing the glass reinforcing layer and after curing, embedding the other surface of the core.
