Alternate zones have normal clothing and clotting where the wires are partially or completely removed, covered, filled in or ground down, alternatively the wires are modified in fineness, shape and/or reduced in density. This produces a web with alternating stripes of high and low density fibre concentration. The web is then folded e.g. by an oscillating funnel 7 or oscillating rolls at the low density zones. This provides a fleece having obliquely raised three dimensionally orientated fibres. Successive zones on the doffer may have differing lengths.
