Abstract
1387200 Dolls M I GLASS [trading as MARVIN GLASS & ASSOCIATES] 8 Dec 1972 [30 Dec 1971] 56682/72 Heading A6S A doll which first shuts its eyes and then falls over as if asleep has a head 12. Fig. 7, and a torso divided into two chambers 38, 76 with passageways 64, 70a, 50, &c between them through which sand, &c can flow. The upper chamber 76 is flexible, and holes 70a, &c are arranged only on the side of the doll shown, so that sand 41 empties more quickly from that side of the doll than from the other: this sand falls upon an inclined portion 48 of the bottom chamber, so that the upper chamber collapses towards that side and the doll ultimately falls over on that side. In the upright position shown, a valve 52 allows only slow flow of sand 41 from the upper to the lower chamber 38. By turning the doll upside down, Fig. 5, the valve 52 moves to an open position, uncovering a relatively large hole 66 for rapid flow of sand 41 from the bottom chamber 38 back into the upper chamber 26. At the same time, sand 41 flows through holes in a valve plate 108 to an extensible portion 100 of the upper chamber 76. The extensible portion 100 fills and expands inside a hollow neck 88 so that two weights 134, connected by a chain 132 to eye and eyelid operating mechanism 124a, &c, are held in the position shown. When the doll is re-inverted from the Fig. 5 position to the Fig. 7 position, the extensible portion 100 empties through the holes in the valve plate 108 into the upper chamber 76, thus allowing two weights 134 to fall and taughten the chain 132, so as to actuate the eye mechanism and close the eyelids 20. The doll subsequently falls over as described above. The dolls head 12 can rotate on a flange 118 of the neck. The head and torso shown are held inside a garment (28), Figs. 1-4 (not shown), which includes stuffed arms and legs.
