Abstract

1387136 Moulding foams BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 7 July 1972 [9 July 1971] 31930/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] Moulded foams of a mixture of 5-95% by wt. of polyvinyl chloride and/or post-chlorinated polyvinyl chloride containing 56-70% by wt. of bound chlorine, with a chlorinated polyethylene containing 4-45% by wt. of bound chlorine are made by mixing the polymer mixture with a peroxide as cross-linking agent which causes no cross-linking of the polymer at the mixing temperature and 2-25% by wt. of a heat decomposable expanding agent, heating the mixture under pressure in a gas-tight mould initially having virtually no gas space, the heating being carried to temperatures above the softening ranges of the polymers and above the decomposition points of the expanding and crosslinking agents to provide an expandable polymeric melt, the pressure is removed and the volume of the mould is then enlarged from 3-35 times that of the resulting expandable melt within a period of from a fraction of a second to 20 seconds and the foam is then cooled. In the examples mixtures of the polymers with ethoxylated soya bean oil, lead stearate, tribasic lead sulphate, azodicarbonamide, 1,3 - bis - (tbutylperoxyisopropyl)benzene and/or pcarbomethoxy - N - nitroso - N - methylbenzamide, were made either on rolls or in an extruder. The resultant crepes or granules were then foamed in moulds, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, where loose base-plate 2 has located thereon interconnected side walls 1, a heated plunger 3 is inserted down to the level of the polymer mixture 4 and is attached to upper part 5 of a press, plate 2 lying on the lower part 6; plate 7 hermetically seals the mould and stop pins 8 determine the level to which plate 7 can be raised; the polymer mixture is heated by electrical means 10. The products may be used as insulating materials, fillings for expansion joints, pipe lagging, sound proofed partitions, floats (life belts), and wall panels.
