Abstract
1386960 Capstans and winches R T V HAY 28 March 1973 [29 Dec 1971] 60363/71 Heading B8B A marine snubbing winch comprises a support 1 which includes a base-plate 1a arranged to be secured to a marine deck and a capstan 3 is rotatably mounted on the support. A first unidirectional element between the capstan and the support allows rotation of the capstan relative to the support in one direction but not in the opposite direction and a drive collar 2 is rotatably mounted relative to the support between the base-plate and the capstan. A second unidirectional element links the drive collar and the capstan to allow drive from the collar to the capstan when the collar is rotated in said one direction but not when the collar is rotated, relative to the capstan in the opposite direction. The capstan has a peripheral vee-groove 4 into which rope 5 can become frictionally locked, the sides of the groove converging at an included angle of between 12 and 25 degrees. In the embodiment described both unidirectional elements are ratchet drives and the drive collar has slots 6 into which one end of a lever can be inserted to increase the turning moment which can be applied manually to the capstan.
