Abstract

1386740 Mould closing devices IMPROVED MACHINERY Inc 5 April 1973 [21 April 1972] 16313/73 Heading B5A A moulding machine comprises first and second platens 10, 24 one of which is movable, at least one tie rod 38 projecting from one platen towards the other, a plurality of breech blocks 46, 48 (Fig. 5) for gripping the tie rod 38 therebetween and means mounting the breech blocks for movement both longitudinally and laterally of the tie rod. The mounting means comprises carriages 62 slidably mounted on rods 64 by means of separate bearing shoes 66. Flat surfaces 74 on the carriages 62 slidably engage flat surfaces (70), Fig. 3 (not shown), on the shoes 66. The breech blocks are moved towards each other to grip the tie rod 38 by means of fluid operated piston and cylinder actuators 76, which are supplied from the same source so as to produce equal oppositely directed forces on the breech blocks. The breech blocks 46, 48 and the ends 54 of the tie rods 38 are grooved as at 56, 58. The invention is applied to an injection moulding machine (Fig. 1) wherein the platen 24 is suspended by a supporting shoe 26 from a guide track 28 which is supported on posts 30. Initial closing of platen 24 is effected by a piston and cylinder motor 36. Final clamping pressure is applied by a "load cell" 92 (Fig. 5) to which fluid is supplied through a passage 106. Movement of the tie rods 38 is cushioned by pistons 98 in cylinders 96. Cylinders 96 also contain pistons 100 to assist initial opening movement of the mould. Operation of the mould closing means is controlled by limit switches 102, 104, 108.
