Abstract

1386312 Controlling mixing by viscosity INOUE-JAPAX RESEARCH Inc 30 Oct 1972 49934/72 Heading B1C [Also in Division G1] Substances which combine to form a solid dental material such as a dental cement are mixed together, and the viscosity or optical properties of the mixture are continuously monitored so that mixing may be terminated when a desired degree of solidification has taken place. Viscosity measurements: in Fig. 1 a bifurcated arm 6 is vibrated to and fro by electromagnet 2. The arm is centered by springs 1f, and a capsule 7 is inserted into the bifurcated section. The capsule contains mercury 7a, alloy 7b, and an optional mixing pestle 7c. An electric signal representing the arm vibrations and harmonics is given by a strain gauge 8, a piezoelectric device or a microphone, it being found that the harmonic content of the signal is a measure of the viscosity of the amalgan formed in the capsule. The capsule may be retained by a screw passing through one of the arm bifurcations, and the arm may be driven through a spring and eccentric cam, Fig. 6 (not shown). Optical measurements: light may be reflected from the mixture within the capsule, or transmitted through it. In either case the light is focussed onto a photocell, photoconductor or other detector and its amplitude is compared with a preset value, mixing being terminated when the desired value is reached.
