Abstract

1386241 Diamond-making apparatus STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 15 June 1972 [24 June 1971] 29577/71 Heading B1X [Also in Division Cl] Diamond is synthesised by subjecting a body of carbonaceous material and a catalyst to pressure and temperature conditions such that diamond produced is stable with respect to graphite, and a zone of molten catalyst is caused to move through the body, its position being controlled by a local temperature gradient superposed on the body and moved along the length thereof. The zone melting is achieved with the conventional multiple anvil high pressure apparatus by a helically wound electric heater element having a plurality of tapped connections along its length, each connected to a different anvil and controlling the current to each section between adjacent tapped connexions so as to cause a substantially level temperature profile and a local rise in temperature to melt the zone, the local rise and the molten zone being caused to pass along the length of the body.
