Abstract

1386082 Measuring pressure electrically JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 17 March 1972 [26 March 1971] 8216/71 Heading G1N [ Also in Division H1] In a force balancing arrangement for measuring pressure, a bellows 20 Fig. 3, subjected to the test pressure externally or internally or both, for measuring differential pressure, is attached to the central, moving electrode 35 of a differential capacitor, the change in capacitance being measured in a bridge circuit Fig. 9 to produce a corresponding direct current which is fed to an electromagnetic force applying device 24 which restores the bellows and the moving electrode substantially to their normal positions. The assembly is mounted on three inter-connected fixed members 10, 11, 12. One end of the bellows 20 is attached by plug 21 to bracket member 12, and the other end is attached by plug 22 to an arm 16 and by a flexible strip 19 to a lever 15. The moving electrode 35 of the differential capacitor is bolted to arm 16, the fixed electrodes 30, 31 are mounted on a spacer 29, leaving a gap between them for the moving electrode 35, and spacer 29 is mounted on the frame member 10. The electromagnetic force applying device 24 comprises a core 25, shaped as a spool to carry two primary and two secondary windings, which is secured to the frame 10 by three bolts 28 arranged equi-angularly round a captive ball 26, whereby the orientation of core 25 can be adjusted. Surrounding the core is a tubular armature 23 rigidly attached to lever 15. Intermediate bracket member 11 is attached by crossed leaf hinges 18 to lever 15 at one end and by similar hinges 17 to arm 16 at the other end 11a, whereby bracket 11 acts as a pivotal support for lever 15 and arm 16 about spaced parallel axes. The differential capacitor comprising electrodes 30, 31, 35 is connected in a bridge circuit Fig. 9 with inductors 42, 43, energised by an oscillator 40. A pressure change on bellows 20 produces movement of central electrode 35 which unbalances the bridge, the unbalance voltage being amplified by transistors 51, 52 and phase rectified by components 56 to 65, further amplified by transistors 68, 72 and fed to opposed half windings 75, 76 of the force applying device 24. Two further half windings 82, 83 are fed with a constant D.C. from source 84 to polarize the core 25. Thus the device 24 substantially restores the moving electrode 35 to its normal position, and the current in windings 75, 76 to do this is measured across resistor 77 and is proportional to the test pressure.
