Abstract

1386043 Rolling gears LEAR SIEGLER 25 Jan 1973 [27 Jan 1972] 3838/73 Heading B3M A composite rolling and chamfering die enables teeth to be rolled on a gear-wheel, and the teeth to be chamfered at one end, the die having a conventional central section to one side of which a chamfering die section is attached. The die may have a chamfering section 80, Fig. 2, on either side of the central section 14. The gear-wheel is initially rolled by the central section, is traversed axially to chamfer the teeth at one end, and is traversed in the opposite direction to chamfer the other ends of the teeth. The gear is finally rolled by the central section to remove protuberances caused by the chamfering dies and to finish form the teeth. The die teeth 104, Fig. 4, may be helical, whereas the aligned chamfering teeth 118 are tapered. This causes the acute edges of the gear teeth 106 and 108 to be chamfered by the surfaces 114, when the teeth are traversed laterally. If a spur gear is rolled, slight chamfers may be provided on all four corners of each tooth. The sections 80 are attached by a transverse pin 90 to the central section 14 and are angularly adjustable by means of pairs of screws 94 (Fig. 3, not shown). The die 14, Fig. 1, is carried in a machine frame 10, and the gear W is traversed axially relative to the die. The gear is supported on a table 60 which can be fed laterally by a screw 48 or can be rocked about a pivot 62, either motion leading to a suitable traversing motion. The table 60 is also able to be fed vertically by a toggle assembly 28 and to be adjusted vertically by a screw 24.
