The master pattern is obtained by forming a grid pattern by superimposing four networks of equal-sized hexagons upon one another, the hexagons of each network having their sides arranged parallel to one another and overlapping so that the three diametrical lines drawn between opposing corners of a hexagon of a first network each coincide with a side of a hexagon of the other three networks respectively (see Fig. 1A) to form rhombohedral cells and by colouring the so-formed rhombohedral cells in six colours, two colours alternating in each of three directions, the colouring in one such direction being shown in Figure 2. The apparatus includes the following components; (a) a plurality of sets of pieces, each set consisting of 48 pieces and each piece being formed of seven linked rhombohedral cells of the master pattern, each piece being one of 77 possible shapes, (b) boards comprising arrays of rhomboidal cells upon which the pieces of (a) above may be placed, the boards being of fixed size or of variable size by combining units of 48 cells as shown in Figure 7, or being of fixed size with variable e.g. rotatable inserts of cells and (c) auxiliary and miscellaneous pieces. The boards (b) and pieces in (a) above may have co-operating dimples and projections for locating the pieces upon the boards. Only one face of the boards may be provided with the master pattern, the reverse face being provided with the uncoloured grid pattern. The sides of the rhombohedral cells need not be linear provided the angles and nodes of the master pattern are adhered to. The miscellaneous pieces may be rings, caps and thimbles or linked combinations of rhombohedral cells or of ¢ cells. They may also be single cells or linked multiples of the pieces in (a) above.
