Abstract

1385849 M H D Flowmeters SPETSIALNOE KONSTRUKTORSKOE BJURO MAGNITNOI GIDRODINAMIKI INSTITUTA FIZIKI AKADEMII NAUK LATVIISKOI SSR 27 July 1973 35846/73 Heading G1N In an M.H.D. flowmeter, auxiliary electrodes are provided beside the main electrodes to detect eddy-current signals (distinguishable by 90 degrees phase shift) and the two signals are compared to determine the flow-rate whereby the measurement is less critically dependent on the magnetic system. As shown with a simple transverse A. C. magnetic field signals from main and two pairs of auxiliary electrodes 3, 4 are passed through amplifiers 7, 8 to phase discriminators 9, 10 feeding a comparator 11. In this example signals from two sets of auxiliary electrodes 4 are summed at 6. The Specification shows schematically that if the magnetic field is spaced along the pipe-line with the magnitude and field sense having a sinusoidal distribution (i.e. zero nett field), the auxiliary contacts should be spaced #/4 of the spatial wavelength from the main contacts Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), and may all be on one side of the pipe as in Fig. 7 (not shown).
