Abstract
1385669 Electro-erosion J M WEBER 18 July 1973 34277/73 Heading B3V An electric discharge machine includes means for orbiting the electrode holder on a regular polygonal path in a plane transverse to its advance towards the workpiece and means for reducing the size of the orbit in the course of the advance. An electrode 15 is secured by screws 28 in a bracket 18 releasably fastened to a block 16 which is mounted on slidable rods 22, 27. An arm 42 pivotally attached at 43 to a rotor 30 is urged by a spring 44 into contact with a roller 40 which is fixed by a post 37 to the block 16. Releasably attached to the block 16 is an arm 61 having a square, triangular, hexagonal or octagonal opening 62 in which is positioned a rod 47 having a tapered portion 57. When the rotor 30 is driven by a shaft 35 having a worm 33 meshing with a worm-wheel 38 on the rotor 30, the block 16 and the electrode 15 are caused to follow a polygonal path determined by the configuration of the opening 62 relative to the tapered portion 57 of the rod 47. The electrode 15 moves relatively quickly along the straight sides of the poygonal path and dwells for relatively long periods in the angular corners of the path. With the rod 47 fixed in a desired position by a clamp ring 52, the diameter of the tapered portion 57 of the rod 47 relative to the opening 62 will increase as the electrode 15 advances into the workpiece causing the orbit of the polygonal path to gradually decrease and a tapered cavity to be produced in the workpiece having the same taper as the taper of the rod portion 57.
