Abstract

1385119 Laminates RHONE-POULENC SA 20 Oct 1972 [22 Oct 1971] 48495/72 Heading B5N A laminate of total weight less than 2800 g/m<SP>2</SP> and for use in the fitting-out of aeroplanes comprises an internal layer of stiffened gauze which is non-inflammable and does not evolve toxic fumes on pyrolysis and which is bonded to the adjacent layers by an organosilicon polymer, polyimide, polyamide-imide or a polycondensate of a diamine and an unsaturated bis-imide, and at least one outer layer of a metal foil less than 40 microns thick. The gauze may be of glass, polyimide or polyamide-imide fibres and may be impregnated with a phenol-formaldehyde, organosilicon, polyimide or polyamideimide resin. The outer metal layer may be of steel, Al, Cu, Ti or alloys thereof and may be bonded to the adjacent layer by an alkali metal silicate, organic ortho-silicate or organosilicon adhesive. Glass fabric or asbestos paper layers may be interposed between the metal and gauze and may also be applied to the other face of the gauze. Lamination is effected under heat and pressure in a mould. In the examples, the following laminates are prepared, polyester films being used as spacers: (a) aluminium foil; asbestos paper coated by vinyl-tris-(methoxyethoxy)silane and impregnated with polysiloxane; phenolic-impregnated glass gauze; and then either further asbestos and foil layers, or a single coated and impregnated poplin glass fabric: (b) Al foil; poplin glass fabric; glass fibre gauze; poplin glass fabric.
