Abstract

1384911 Rope twisting WARNER & SWASEY CO 18 April 1972 [6 May 1971] 17980/72 Heading D1T In a strand twister 24, Fig. 1, support 54 is rotated about axis 46 to twist strand fed along the axis and over guide roller 74 and capstans 40, 42 mounted on and rotating with the support. The twisted strand 20 is passed to flyer arm 50, rotating with the support, to be wound on spool 30. Motor 32 rotates the spool which rotates the support via strand 20 and the arm. Capstan 40 is rotated relative to the support by the rotation of the support. To twist strand in one direction, Fig. 2, the strand is fed in groove 86 of the freely rotatable roller 74 to capstan 42, is wound anti-clockwise about capstans 42, 40, and is fed via passage 60 to arm 50. Roller 74 is carried by arm 94 on member 90 which rotates with support 54 about axis 46. Member 90 is also swingable relative to member 54 about axis 46 so that, to twist the strand in the opposite direction, the roller 74 may be swung to the dashed-line position shown in Fig. 2. The strand is then wound clockwise about the capstans and fed through passage 62. To prevent broken strand from whipping, a rubber-tyred, freely-rotatable roller 112 mounted on support 54 is pressed against a portion of the strand running in a groove in capstan 40. Roller 112 is adjustable radially of capstan 40 by eccentric adjuster 120. A second, adjustable roller may be mounted on the opposite side of the capstan.
