Abstract

1384716 Moulding diaphragms MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd and SEKISUI KAGAKU KOGYO KK 30 May 1972 [28 May 1971 5 July 1971 12 July 1971] 25216/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division H4] A loudspeaker diaphragm of foamed plastics material having spaced regions of density lower than the remainder of the diaphragm is made by placing foamed thermoplastic sheeting in a die and heating the die while pressing the sheeting to frusto conical shape. The die has locally different cooling rates and/or local recesses or protuberances which provide the lower density regions. Alternatively thermosetting material is poured into a mould and the mould is heated while the material is pressed into shape. The mould has locally different cooling rates and/or local recesses or protuberances. An aqueous emulsion of rubber or thermoplastic resin is applied by spraying, brushing or dipping to one or both faces of the diaphragm before or after moulding to form a coating. A peripheral suspension member 22 for the diaphragm is formed by pressing from a sheet of closed cell foam thermoplastics, e.g. E.V.A. copolymer alone or mixed with polyethylene, which has been cross-linked with an organic oxide or by irradiation.
