Abstract

1384603 Propylene polymerization SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 26 May 1972 [28 May 1971] 24899/72 Heading C3P Propylene is polymerized in a liquid diluent at 62‹ to 92‹ C. and a partial propylene pressure of at least 2 bars absolute in the presence of a catalyst system containing TiCl 3 and a dialkyl aluminium halide (e.g. diethyl aluminium chloride), which system has been brought into prior contact with sufficient propylene in a liquid diluent at a temperature below 62‹ C. and a pressure below 2 bars absolute to form at least 0À1 gm. of polymer per gm. of TiCl 3 . The TiCl 3 may be prepared by (a) gradually adding TiCl 4 to a trialkyl aluminium compound at - 50‹ to - 90‹ C. after which the mixture is brought to above 80‹ C. or (b) mixing TiCl 4 with a dialkyl aluminium halide at - 50 to -45‹ C. in a paraffinic diluent using a specific stirring capacity of 50 to 2000 watt per m.<SP>3</SP> of reactor volume, the temperature being subsequently raised to at least 15‹ C. while stirring is continued at a specific capacity within the said limits. The polymerization may be continuous and be carried out in a stirred reactor under homogeneous steady state conditions. Catalyst residues may be removed from the product by treatment with an acid and an alcohol.
