Abstract
1384470 Water-in-oil emulsions NALCO CHEMICAL CO 17 May 1972 [12 July 1971] 23208/72 Heading C3P A water-in-oil emulsion comprises an inert hydrophobic liquid ranging from 5À0 to 26% by weight of the emulsion and an aqueous phase excluding emulsifier ranging from 74 to 95% by weight of the emulsion which phase comprises a synthetic water soluble vinyl addition polymer having a concentration between 20 and 50% by weight of the emulsion and water ranging between 23 and 45% by weight of the emulsion; and additionally a water-in-oil emulsifying agent having a concentration between 0À1 and 30% by weight of the emulsion. The emulsion may be prepared by inverse emulsion polymerization using a water-in-oil polymerization mixture of the appropriate composition. The preferred hydrophobic liquid is a branched-chain isoparaffinic solvent. Examples describe the copolymerization of acrylamide with acrylic or methacrylic acid and the homopolymerization of dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate and styrene sulphonic acid. Sorbitan monostearate is used as the emulsifier and azobis-(isobutyronitrile) as the catalyst. The emulsion may be inverted in water by the use of a surfactant to form a solution of the polymer.
