Abstract
1384303 Super-conductors THOMSONBRANDT 4 May 1972 [7 May 1971] 20899/72 Headings H1A AS and A4D A composite super-conductor comprises a layer of crystalline super-conductor material having a Formula A 3 B, where A is selected from group V and B from groups III and IV, on a core which is the more refractory of two constituents A and B, and at least 20% of the thickness of the superconductor layer comprises a sub-layer of substantially equiaxed grains having a size of from a few hundredths to a few tenths of a micron. As shown the conductor comprises a Nb core 1, a sub-layer 2 of fine grains of Nb 3 Sn, a sub-layer 3 of large oriented grains of Nb 3 Sn and an outer layer 4 of Sn. The structure is produced by preheating a Nb core to 800C for 3 minutes, immersing it in a bath of molten Sn at 950C for 1 minute and postheating at 900 C for 3 minutes and then cooling abruptly at a rate of 100C/sec. The Nb core may contain a small proportion of Zr, Ti or Hf and be formed in a hardened state, and the Sn may contain As and Bi. The compounds V 3 Ga, Nb 3 (AlGe), and V 3 Si are also mentioned.
