Abstract
1384036 Hexafluoropropylene process E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 11 June 1973 [12 June 1972] 27719/73 Heading C2C Hexafluoropropylene is produced by pyrolysing a mixture containing tetrafluoroethylene and CO 2 in a weight ratio of from 1À1 : 1 to 25 : 1 in a reaction zone at a total pressure of 0À75-2 atmospheres absolute, partial pressure of C 2 F 4 of at least 360 mm. Hg absolute and a temperature of 700-900‹ C. to a conversion of C 2 F 4 of at least 20 wt. per cent to C 3 F 6 and a mixture of CO 2 and unreacted C 2 F 4 is separated from the C 3 F 6 . Preferably the feed mixture contains at least 40 wt. per cent of CO 2 and the conversion of C 2 F 4 is 20-80 wt. per cent. HCl or HF may be added to the pyrolysis furnace adjacent to the exit end of the furnace to inhibit polymerization of unreacted C 2 F 4 . The CO 2 and C 2 F 4 are preferably removed from the final reaction product by distillation.
