Abstract

1384003 Depositing material OWENS- CORNING FIBERGLAS CORP 31 Jan 1973 [3 Feb 1972] 4894/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division B2] Material, e.g. resin and chopped glass fibre, is deposited on a surface of revolution by rotating the surface about its axis of revolution and moving the depositing means over the surface in a plane containing the axis of revolution at a constant distance from the surface and at a speed which increases as it approaches said axis to a maximum when crossing said axis and decreases as it moves away from said axis. As shown in Figs. 1, 3, the apparatus comprises a pair of hemispherical formers 10 each mounted on a shaft 12 journalled on a pedestal 16 and driven by motor 18. A glass strand chopper 22 and a resin spray head 24 are mounted on leg 26 depending from arm 28. Arm 28 comprises parts 32, 34 pivoted together at motor driven hinge 36. Inner part 32 is mounted on column 30 and rotated thereon by motor 76. Hinge 36 is driven by motor 52. Part 32 is rotated until hinge 36 lies over the centre of spherical former 10 and part 34 rotated to distribute the material. The other former 10 is then similarly coated. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown), the former has a part-spherical crown portion (82) surrounded by a knuckle portion (84), the centres of curvature (86) of which lie on a radius of portion (82). The inner part (32<SP>1</SP>) of arm (28<SP>1</SP>) is pivoted over the centre of curvature of portion (82) and the hinge (36<SP>1</SP>) is mounted at the end of part (32<SP>1</SP>) so as to be placed over the centres of curvature (86) of portion (84). With hinge (36<SP>1</SP>) over centre (86), part (34<SP>1</SP>) is rotated over portion (84) until the whole arm (28<SP>1</SP>) is straight, which is then rotated about column (30<SP>1</SP>) over portion (82) and then part (34<SP>1</SP>) is rotated about portion (84) again. The movements of stepping motors 52, 76 are controlled by a tape programme. The articles cast may be the head portions for containers, tanks, &c.
