Abstract
1383498 Polyimides WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 15 Nov 1971 [11 Dec 1970] 52882/71 Heading C3R Polyimides or their precursor polyamideacids result from the reaction of (1) an aromatic diamine with (2) (a) a dianhydride containing imide linkages which is prepared by reacting 4- aminophthalic acid and a dianhydride containing 2 cyclic anhydride groups, or (b) a mixture of (a) and another aromatic dianhydride. Dianhydrides 2(a) are described and claimed in Specification 1,383,499. Various other linkages may be incorporated in the polymer chain either by using dianhydrides or diamines containing such linkages or by mixing appropriate polyfunctional compounds with the polyamideacid solution, e.g. vinyl or epoxy compounds, polyols, polyacids, polyamides, polyesters or polyurethanes. Extensive lists of diamines (1) and dianhydrides (2)(b) or for preparing (2)(a) are given, as well as 30 specific examples of polymers. The polymers are stated to have greater thermoplasticity and ease of fabrication than polyimides from reactants not including 2(a). Examples illustrate the thermoplastic properties of films thereof, their moulding properties and their use as adhesive to laminate various substrates and compare these with a conventional polyimide.
