Abstract

1382972 Extruding titanium-beryllium composite BRUSH WELLMAN Inc 16 April 1973 [18 Aug 1972] 18276/73 Heading B3P [Also in Division C7] A fibrous Ti-Be composite is formed by extruding at 1350-1525‹ F. and a reduction ratio of 6 : 1 to 100 : 1 a canned assembly of a Ti matrix and axially extending Be fibre precursors. The Be may contain 0À2-6% BeO and the Ti may be replaced by the alloys Ti-5%Al- 2À5%Sn; Ti-6%Al-6%V-2%Sn; Ti-6% Al-4%V. The composite preferably contains 40-60% volume Be and the balance Ti or Ti alloy. The Be fibre precursors may be rods, bars, wires of Be powder formed by cold pressing vacuum hot pressing, cold pressing and sintering and optionally coining or a mixture of the powder and a binder. The composite assembly is formed in several ways such as (1) filling holes in a solid cast or wrought Ti body with Be powder, (2) pouring Be powder into paper, plastic, Al or Ti or Ti alloy tube separators and pouring Ti powder around the tubes, (3) supporting Be rods at both ends by steel discs and packing Ti powder around the rods, (4) packing Be powder into a tube of Ti-6Al-4V. The assembly after packing in a steel can may be pressed cold or isostatically prior to heating and extrusion.
