Abstract

1382431 Coating COLGATE-PALMOLIVE CO 15 Oct 1971 [20 Oct 1970 (4)] 48099/71 Heading B2E [Also in Division D1] Fabrics are softened and/or rendered antistatic by drying after laundering in a heated tumble dryer in the presence of one or more rigid bodies coated with a specified conditioning agent which melts or softens at the drying temperature of 10 to 90‹C, preferably 50 to 90‹C and is thus taken up by the fabrics. The fabrics may be of cotton, synthetics or a blend of cotton and synthetic fibres. The rigid body may be a plastics foam sphere, a hollow sphere, a sphere having indentations which key the layer of conditioner, or a rectangular, circular or elliptical plate. The body may comprise wood, paperboard metal or plastics (polystyrene, polyurethane, polyester polyvinyl chloride or nylon, and have a volume of 5 to 500 c.c. A coating of 0.0005 to 0.5 cm, preferably 0.01 to 0.1 cm is applied by immersing the bodies briefly in molten conditioner or by spraying molten conditioner. Cold air is used to cool the coatings. The conditioner composition is selected from (A) a C 8 -C 22 fatty acid C 1 -C 5 alkanolamide, a dialkanolamide or mixtures of alkanolamide or dialkanolamides, preferably commercial stearic monoethanolamide, 4 parts, and stearic diethanolamide, 1 part; (B) a mixture of a water-soluble surface active sulphate or sulphonate salt, e.g. sodium lauryl sulphate, with a surface active nonionic compound of molecular weight 300 to 25,000 containing a polyoxyethylene and/or polyoxypropylene chain in a weight ratio of 1:10 to 10:1; (C) a mixture of a fabric-substantive cationic conditioning compound and a polyethoxy or polypropoxy C 8 -C 22 alkyl amine or polyethoxy or polypropoxy nonionic surface active agent, e.g. a mixture of 4 parts dialkyl dimethyl ammonium chloride, where the alkyl groups are obtained from hydrogenated tallow alcohols and 1 part of the ethylene oxide condensation product of stearyl amine and 15 moles ethylene oxide. The conditioning composition may also contain bactericides, fungicides, fire retardants, shrink proofing agents sizes (e.g. starch) soil repellents dyes, lubricants odour counteractants, perfumes, petroleum waxes, fatty acids mono-, di- and triglycerides and other plasticisers and hardening agents, sodium acetate and water. A mixture of conditioning agents may be used to obtain a desired softening temperature.
