Abstract

1382025 Rechargeable metal/air cell SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAAT. SCHAPPIJ NV 14 Jan 1972 [15 Oct 1970] 49032/70 Heading H1B A rechargeable metal/air cell, has its recharging electrode 37, 36 situated to define electrolyte filled compartments 31, 32 between a metal or metal alloy electrode 38 and an air electrode 35, 34, 33 sach that during recharging the air electrode can be ionically isolated from the metal electrode by replacing the electrolyte in compartment 31 by air or other non-conducting gas. The non-conducting case 39 defines a further chamber 30 which is supplied with air. Electrical terminals 41 and 40 connect the cell to its load or charging supply, terminal 40 being linked to both the air and recharge electrodes by wire 43. Fig. 5 shows the assembly of spacing frames carrying cell components to form the cell. The frames carry respectively an end plate 50, air electrode 57, recharge electrode 58 and metal electrode 59 bonded to the face of the end plate. The ducts in the frames supply the required electrolyte or air to the electrodes, grooves from the appropriate duct communicating with the chambers formed by assembling the frames together. The required flow of air or electrolyte to the chamber corresponding to 31, Fig. 3, is controlled by an external two-way valve. Figs. 6, 7, 8 (not shown), show embodiments having respectively, a fluidized bed metal electrode, a gauze recharging electrode in combination with a non-porous separator; and an air electrode with its recharge electrode formed on the opposite side of a porous support, the isolating chamber corresponding to 31, Fig. 3, being formed within the porous substrate by control of air pressure. The description discloses examples of materials for the electrodes. In Fig. 3, the electrodes comprise a metal electrode 38, a rechargeable electrode formed from a porous plastics material support 36 and a metal face 32; and an air electrode formed from a support 33; a conductive layer 34 and a catalytic layer 35.
