Abstract

1381972 Hinges BERGH BROS CO INC 2 Feb 1972 [1 March 1971 3 Jan 1972] 4824/72 Heading E2F [Also in Division B8] The hinge between the base and lid sections of a container comprises a pair of U-shaped hinge elements which are fixably or slidably mounted on opposed end walls of one of the sections and include pintles engaged in circular recesses or elongate openings, respectively, in the end walls of the other section to permit lateral movement of the hinge axis relative to one of the sections. In the embodiment shown in Figure 4, a U-shaped hinge element 32 is slidably mounted in a slot 24 formed in each of two opposed end walls of a lid section 14 and a pintle on each hinge element 32 projects inwardly to engage in a hole 36 or recess in each corresponding end wall of a base section 12. In a modification of the embodiment, (Figures 6, 7A-E), each slot (24') extends along the whole length of the wall in which it is formed. In a further embodiment (Figures 8 and 9) a U-shaped hinge element (64) is resiliently clamped to each of two opposed walls of a base section (12") and outwardly projecting pintles (66) on the hinge elements (64) engage in slots (68) formed in the inner surfaces of corresponding opposed walls of a lid section (14"). The slots may be inclined or parallel to lower free edges of the said walls of the lid section (14"). The hinge arrangement incorporated in each of the embodiments is not visible when the container is closed.
