Abstract

1381878 Detecting irregularities in a moving web P LIPPKE 26 Nov 1971 [26 Nov 1970] 49929/71 Heading G1A In a device for detecting irregularities such as discolouration, holes and thickenings in a web of paper, a light beam passes via a transparent window 7, a radiant heat filter 4, masking members 18, 19 and a window 21, to be incident partly on the end portions of a row of feelers 12 which rest on the paper web moving over a roller 17, and partly on the web itself. The diffuse reflected light is received by a photo-sensitive element 22 and any marked change in the reflected light intensity indicates the presence of an irregularity be it due to a discolouration or a fault in the web's physical structure. The feelers are held in a slot 25 of a mounting 15 to permit adjustment of the feelers into and out of the beam path. A stream of air enters at aperture 9, passes along channel 8 and exits between feelers 12 and window 21 to remove paper dust.
