Abstract

1381766 Crystallizing sugar HYESONS SUGAR MILLS Ltd 23 Aug 1973 [24 Aug 1972] 39521/72 Heading B1B [Also in Division C6] A vacuum pan for the continuous boiling of sugar comprises a vapour-tight substantially cylindrical casing 1 of greater length than diameter; having its longitudinal axis substantially horizontal and divided internally by a series of partitions 5-9 perpendicular to the axis into a plurality of intercommunicating compartments a-e, all opening into a common vapour space 14 extending above them within the casing, the compartment nearest one end a being provided with an inlet for sugar syrup and seed crystals 20 and the compartment nearest the opposite end being provided with an outlet for sugar syrup and product crystals, the communication between adjacent compartments being effected in alternate partitions of the series respectively by underflow openings located at the bottom of the partitions and by overflow weirs at the top of the partitions, so that the sugar syrup and crystals are constrained to follow a tortuous path when flowing through the pan, with means 28 for steam heating the sugar syrup and crystals inside the pan and means for maintaining a reduced pressure in the vapour space over the compartments. The pan may comprise at least seven partitions and the overflow weirs may extend only halfway across the width of the respective partitions, their position alternating laterally along the series of partitions. Mechanical stirring means 36 may be provided in at least some of the compartments.
