Abstract

1381683 Making helical seam tubes HOESCH WERKE AG 2 May 1973 [4 May 1972] 20923/73 Headings B3A and B3E In making welded helical seam tube from metal strip, the resistance to bending of the strip is measured prior to the strip entering the tube forming device, and the instantaneous value so measured is used to control the tube forming device so that the strip curvature and residual stresses in the tube are maintained within predetermined limits. In Fig. 1, the strip 1 passes through a straightener 2, edge trimmer 3, feed unit 4, roll unit 51, 52 which bends up the edges of the strip, and into a roll curving unit of which roll 8 is adjustable normal to the plane of the strip. The edge bending unit is intended to compensate for the tendency of the tube to arch outwardly in the region of the helical seam weld, and the force necessary to bend the edges is measured in a transducer 12 and taken as a measure of the resistance of the strip to bending. This measure is compared with a norm, and any deviation is passed through a delay device 16 so that roll 18 is adjusted by servo motor 18 to apply curving forces to each part of the strip in accordance with the resistance to bending of that part of the strip as measured when it passed rolls 51, 52.
