Abstract

138,112. Kloman, T. W. June 10, 1918, [Convention date]. Valves.-Inlet and exhaust are controlled by a hollow cylindrical valve B<1> or B<2> rotating at onefourth the speed of the cra.nk-shaft. Each valve has a pair of inlet ports such as C<1>, C<2>, Fig. 3, for each cylinder, the ports for the two cylinders shown being 90 degrees apart. In the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, cylinder A' is on the suction stroke, the charge, passing from the inlet chamber c' through an inlet port C' at the right end of the valve, and through the interior of the valve to the inlet port C' which is open to the cylinder A'. Similarly, when the cylinder A<2> is on the suction stroke, the charge enters the valve through one of the ports C<1>. C<2> at the left end and passes through the interior of the valve in the opposite direction. By this method of working. the charge is supplied uniformly and the valve is kept cool. The exhaust is controlled by channels such as D<1>, D<2> in the outer surface of the valve, which place the cylinder ports in communication with an exhaust port D<9> in the valve-chamber. The valve may be formed in sections B', B<2> fixed together at B<5>, or it may consist of a single member divided by partitions.
