Abstract

1380587 Intervehicle signalling arrangements EMI Ltd 13 March 1972 [17 Feb 1971] 4837/71 Heading G4H A travelling vehicle transmits coded signals indicative of its position and motion and receives similarly coded signals from a preceding vehicle, decodes them and compares its own position with that of the preceding vehicle to determine their distance apart. On receiving coded signals from more than one vehicle all the position signals are compared and the vehicle closest ahead determined. To describe the motion of a vehicle signals indicative of speed and acceleration are transmitted and on determining the closest ahead vehicle the relative speeds of the two vehicles are computed. Each vehicle detects the passage of equally spaced markers on the highway, such as radio frequency or optical transmitters, magnetic optical or inductive coding devices, to which its position is referred, positions in between the markers being interpolated from the odometer output. The position, speed and acceleration are transmitted from a vehicle as binary coded radio frequency signals.
