Abstract

1380446 Silencing and treating exhaust gas TENNECO Inc 10 April 1972 [11 June 1971] 16428/72 Heading F1B A gas flow silencer comprises a shell 53 having an inlet 5 and outlet 7, containing a plurality of longitudinally separated sound absorbing bodies 55, 57, 59 having registering central apertures through which pass perforated tubes 85 defining a gas flow-path which communicates through perforations 29 with the sound absorbing bodies and with transverse expansion chambers 61, 63 65, 67 which separate the bodies. Perforations in the partitions 69, 71, 73, 75, 77 and 79 allow the expansion chambers to communicate with the sound absorbing bodies. In a modification, the tube 85 is constituted by a single tube. The sound absorbent material may be glass fibre, asbestos or any particulate sound deadening material including catalyst material capable of promoting the combustion of unburned constituents in the exhaust gas. The sound absorbing bodies 55, 57, 59 may be made as sub assemblies outside the housing, means being provided to keep the sound absorbing material in place e.g. by placing paper around the material or by the use of an organic binder which will burn off in the heat of the exhaust gas.
