1380198 Flavouring composition; tobacco &c FIRMENICH SA 19 Jan 1972 [23 June 1971 11 Jan 1972] 8894/73 Divided out of 1380191 Headings A2B and A2C At least one compound of formula: wherein: the ring contains an endocyclic double bond at position 2, and X is a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyl group; or the ring contains an exocyclic double bond at position 3, and X is an oxygen atom; R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> may be the same or different and each is a lower alkyl group; and Z is an oxygen or sulphur atom; is added to tobacco or a tobacco substitute to flavour it, or is added to at least one other flavouring agent to form a flavouring composition. The addition to tobacco of: 2, 5-dimethyl- 4, 5-dihydrofuran-3-ol-4-one; 2, 5-dimethyl-4, 5-dihydrothiophen-3-ol-4-one; 2-methyl-5-ethyl- 4, 5-dihydrofuran-3-ol-4-one; 2-ethyl-5-methyl- 4, 5-dihydrofuran-3-ol-4-one; and 2, 5-dimethyl- 2, 3-dihydrofuran-3-one are exemplified.
