Abstract
1379484 Impregnating carbon rovings; unwinding unit MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG AG 14 Jan 1972 [15 Jan 1971] 1946/72 Headings D1L and D1J In a process for impregnating carbon rovings (e.g. in the formation of carbon fibre reinforced thermoplastic resins) a roving 1 is wound-off under a controlled tension not exceeding 250 ponds from a pivotal wind-off device 2 at an angle corresponding to the wind-on angle of the roving on the bobbin and passes via roller 4 to an impregnation device comprising a first applicator roll 5 rotating in a thermostatically controlled trough 9 of resin 8 a deflecting roller 6 and a second applicator roll 7 rotating in a similar trough 9a of resin 8a to be impregnated with a controlled thickness of resin on both sides, the impregnated roving being drawn off under increased tension by wind-up bobbin 12 disposed downstream of a series of deflecting braking rollers 11. The rollers 4-11 and troughs 9 and 9a may be disposed as illustrated on a vertically positioned receiving plate. Doctor blades 10, 10a may be provided to regulate the thickness of the coating used. Preferred coating materials are unsaturated polyester and epoxy resins. - The pivotal wind-off device (Fig. 2) suitably comprises a cross-wound supply bobbin 2 mounted on a plate 15 for pivoting about an axis 14 in the plane of the roving run off, the plate 15 being mounted on transverse strut 13a of frame 13. The bobbin 2 is connected via a belt drive with control motor 16 which is also mounted on plate 15 and has an adjustable torque. Plate 15 is connected via lever 17 to eccentric disc 18 rotated by motor 19, the disc being rotated through 180‹ each time a complete layer of carbon roving 1 has been removed from the bobbin 2. Motor 19 is controlled by signals generated by photoelectric reversing means 20, 20a located above the bobbin 2.
