Abstract

1379257 Isomerizing n-paraffins SUN OIL CO OF PENNSYLVANIA 17 Nov 1971 [17 Nov 1970 1 Oct 1971] 53282/71 Heading C5E The octane rating of gasoline streams comprising C 4 -C 10 n.paraffins and sulphur compounds and/or aromatic hydrocarbon impurities is increased by isomerization at 250-340‹ under 100-1000 p.s.i.g. H 2 , at 0À5-10 LHSV, with a catalyst comprising a solid hydrogenation component and an aluminosilicate zeolite which is at least 5% crystalline, the crystalline portion comprising hydrogenmordenite having a SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 mole ratio in the range 15À9 to 50 and containing less than 1 wt. per cent alkali metal cations. The mordenite preferably with a SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 ratio of 16-21 is obtained by leaching H-mordenite with HCl (e.g. 5-12N) at 20-100‹ C. The hydrogenation component may be Pt, Pd, Rh, Re, Ru, Mo, Co or Ni or oxide or sulphide thereof present in amount 0À1-10 wt. per cent.
