Abstract

1379213 Hydro-mechanical variable-speed gear GENERAL MOTORS CORP 12 July 1973 [9 Aug 1972] 33185/73 Heading F2D A transmission providing infinitely variable low and high range drives comprises co-axial input and output shafts 10, 12, planetary gearing arranged circumjacent the input shaft and comprising an input sun wheel 18, a pair of planetary output members 20, 26 connected by a carrier 24 with the output shaft, a first hydraulic drive member constituted by a sun wheel 28 connected by gearing 54, 56 with one shaft 62 of a variable-ratio hydraulic transmission comprising pump/motor units 66, 64 of variable, positive displacement, the shaft 62 being parallel to and radially displaced from the input shaft 10, a second hydraulic drive member constituted by a ring gear 22 connected by gearing 34, 36 with a second shaft 60 of the hydraulic transmission, the shafts 60, 62 being co-axially aligned, and a reaction member 30 operatively connected to a selectively engageable brake 38 of which a portion is disposed intermediate the planetary gearing and the hydraulic transmission. Low range is established when a fluidpressure operated clutch 58 is disengaged and the brake 38 is applied by a fluid-pressure actuator 42. Then, with the unit 66 at maximum displacement and the unit 64 at zero displacement, the sun 28 is held, whilst the ring gear 22 may rotate freely so that no drive is transmitted to the output shaft 12. As the displacement of the unit 64 is increased from zero to maximum the sun 28 is driven at increasing speed to drive the carrier 24, and the resistance to rotation of the ring gear 22 increases, whereby a splittorque drive is established to the output shaft, and when the unit 64 reaches maximum displacement, the speed of the output shaft is further increased by progressive reduction of the displacement of the unit 66. When this displacement reaches zero the unit 64 holds the ring gear 22 stationary so that the planets 26, which have the same number of teeth as the planets 20, rotate the sun 28 at the same speed as the input shaft. High range may then be established by engagement of the clutch 58 and release of the brake 38, whereafter further increase in output speed is obtainable by increase of displacement of the unit 66. Reverse drive in low range is obtainable by reverse adjustment of the displacement of the unit 64.
