Abstract

1378870 Benzopyrylium salts and derivatives thereof RICOH KK 23 Dec 1971 [28 Dec 1970] 60100/71 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions C3 C4 and G2] Benzopyrylium salts of the formula where X is H, halogen, nitro or cyano; Y is H, halogen, nitro, cyano or carboxy; R is H or C 1 -C 4 alkyl; R 2 is H or phenyl; R 3 and R 4 are H, C 1 or C 2 alkyl, or C 1 or C 2 alkoxy; n and n<SP>1</SP> are 1 or 2; and Z- is an anion, may be prepared by reacting a hydroxyaldehyde of formula with a ketone R 1 CH 2 .CO.CH 2 R 2 in an acid medium, e.g. formic acid containing dissolved HCl, and reacting the product in situ with an aldehyde of formula The product may be reacted with an appropriate acid or salt to introduce the desired anion, Z-. On heating in the presence of methanol and an alkali, such as sodium bicarbonate, the benzopyrylium salts form decolorized derivatives of formula The decolorized derivatives react with the parent salts, or others of the same general formula, to form complex salts. The benzopyrylium salts and the complex salts are both effective as sensitizers in photopolymerizable compositions. Various salts are exemplified, all having perchlorate as the anion and all having their substituents in the 2- and/or 6-position of the benzopyrylium system and/or the paraposition of the styryl group.
