Abstract

1378740 Luffing cam apparatus DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 25 March 1966 [1 Jan 1965] 183/65 Heading. B8H [Also in Division E1] To enable an amphibious vehicle 1 to traverse difficult terrain it is provided at its front end with a winch (2), Fig. 2 (not shown) controlling a cable 3 connected at its other end to a land anchor 41. The anchor is carried by a jib arm 40 pivotally connected to a jib arm 21 pivoted to a rotatable pillar 10 on the vehicle. Normally, the arms 21, 40 are folded and lie on the vehicle body but they may be extended as shown in Fig. 1 to place the anchor 41 on the ground. The anchor flukes are self-digging so that when a pull is exerted on the cable 3 by the winch 2 they enter the ground, the vehicle traversing the terrain by operating the winch in conjunction with the normal vehicle propulsion means. When the vehicle reaches the anchor the latter is raised by the arms 21, 40 and the operation may be repeated. The mechanism for pivoting the arm 21 on the pillar 10 comprises a double-acting hydraulic cylinder 29 mounted in the arm and operating two piston rods 30, 31 controlling cables 18, 19, 20. Cables 18, 20 are clamped at one end 34, 35 to the arm 21, pass round pulleys 32, 33 connected to the rod 30, pass over idler pulley 23 and are clamped at their other ends 36, 37 to a stationary pulley 14 rigid with pillar 10. The axis of the pulley 14 coincides with the axis of the pivotal connection between the pillar 10 and arm 21. The cable 19 is clamped at 49 to the arm 21, passes round a pulley 38 connected to the rod 31, passes over an idler pulley 27 and the idler pulley 23, and is clamped at its other end 39 to the pulley 14. A second, similar mechanism, is provided in the arm 21 pivoting the arm 40 about the arm 21 through a pulley 14<SP>1</SP> rigid with the arm 40. The arms 21, 40 may function as a crane by attaching a hook (45) (Fig. 4, not shown) to the end of the arm 40. For lifting heavier loads (Fig. 5, not shown), a pulley block (46) is suspended from the junction of the arms 21, 40, and cable 3 passing over this pulley and having at its end a lifting hook (45). In a further modification (Fig. 6, not shown), a third arm (47) is connected to the arm 40 and a drag line bucket (48) controlled by the cable 3 connected to the arm (47).
