Abstract

1377139 Automatic speed control SCHWEITER ENG WORKS Ltd 21 April 1972 [23 April 1971] 18604/72 Heading G3R [Also in Division H2] The supply to a polyphase motor is controlled using a bi-stable switch, according to the time taken for the motor to accelerate between predetermined speed limits. In an embodiment, the speed of a three-phase motor M is caused to alternate between upper and lower limits by the difference between a motor speed signal from tachometer T and a reference from potentiometer 12, the difference being fed via Schmitt triggers 15, 14, which set the upper and lower speed limits respectively, to flip-flop 16, phase controllers R 19 , S 19 , T 19 , trigger circuits R 18 , S 18 , T 18 , and Triacs R 17 , S 17 , T 17 between the supply 10 and motor M. To maintain the motor average speed constant for varying supply voltages or motor loads, gate 21 compares the period to accelerate from the lower to upper limit with a reference period from monostable circuit 22, which is triggered by pulses from Schmitt trigger 15. If the acceleration period is greater than the reference, i.e. for heavy loads, pulses from gate 21 increase the firing angle of the Triacs via integrator 20, to decrease the acceleration period. If the load reduces, i.e. reference period is greater than the acceleration period, gate 21 produces no pulses and integrator 20 discharges via resistor 23 to reduce the firing angle, see also Figs. 2-6 (not shown). The motor is used to drive a grooved drum and spindles for yarn packages, in a yarn winding machine, and prevents "patterning" of the wound yarn.
