Abstract

1376180 Spades and shovels SPEAR & JACKSON (TOOLS) Ltd 1 March 1973 [31 Dec 1971 7 Jan 1972] 61072/71 and 900/72 Heading A1B [Also in Division B3] A method of making a pressed steel spade blade comprises forming a groove or depression 16 in a throat portion of a spade blade 10 and welding a shaped part 18 of a tang or neck 20 to the throat portion. The spigot portion 22 of the tang is inserted into and welded or brazed to a tubular handle 24 or to a tubular socket to which a wooden, metal or synthetic plastics handle is subsequently attached. The tang may alternatively be of round-section with a chamfered end, Fig. 5, and the spigot portion 28 may be of reduced diameter, Fig. 6 (not shown) forming a shoulder (36) where it joins the head (34).
