Abstract

1376030 Treating dry spun polyacrylonitrile filaments E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 16 Nov 1972 [17 Nov 1971] 52983/72 Heading B5B [Also in Division D1] A rope is formed from dry spun solvent-laden polyacrylonitrile filaments by combining filaments from a plurality of spinning cells into a composite rope, piddling the rope into a container, forwarding the rope from the container to a liquid bath for washing to extract solvent, withdrawing wash liquor from the bath, cooling the withdrawn wash liquor, applying this cooled liquor to the rope prior to the washing step, e.g. by spraying this liquor on the rope as it is being piddled, and withdrawing surplus wash liquor from the container. If desired, ropes from a plurality of containers may be combined and forwarded as a composite tow to the washing bath. The solvent is preferably dimethyl formamide and the washing liquid water. As shown in the Figure a number of solvent-laden yarns 12 from a plurality of spinning cells 10 are passed round roll guides 14 and gathered into a composite rope 16 which is forwarded by pull-rolls 18 from where the rope is piddled by piddler 20 and associated spout 22 into an open top container 24 where it is retained for further processing, i.e. the washdraw machine 30. In this machine ropes 16<SP>1</SP> are combined by rollers 15 into a tow 17 which is passed via rollers 31, 32 ,33 and 34 through a washing bath. From this bath, wash liquor is withdrawn by valve 35 and passed to a cooler 40 from where it is fed to spray nozzles 46 and sprayed on to the piddled rope. In tank 24 the liquor may be withdrawn either by outlet pipe 25 located in the true tank bottom 28 or, by vertical pipe 25<SP>1</SP> extending through false foraminous bottom 26. In both cases the solvent is recovered in apparatus not shown.
