1375811 Removing hepatitis-associated antigen from solution USA GOVERNMENT OF 13 March 1973 [16 March 1972] 12138/73 Heading A5B A process for removing hepatitis-associated antigen from a solution comprising a proteinfraction containing the antigen comprises (a) maintaining the solubility of the antigen-containing protein by adjusting the pH to a value as far as possible from the isoelectric point but such as to permit precipitation of the hepatitisassociated antigen and not to denature the protein; (b) adding a solution, in a solvent which is physiologically tolerable on injection, of polyethylene glycol having a M.W. from 200 to 6000 at a concentration of from 12 to 30 grams of polyethylene glycol per 100 ml. of solution, thereby producing a precipitate containing the antigen, and (c) separating the precipitate from the solution. The protein may be extracted from a precipitate containing the protein and antigen by using a solvent having a pH removed from the isoelectric point of the protein.
